project read, SMK Merbok

20 mentors and 20 mentees working towards literacy together!
About us

Using the mentor-mentee system, project read aims to help 20 Form 1 students (all either at or below Primary 1 literacy level) to become fluent readers.

We meet every Tuesday from 10am to 11.30am to run through the literacy modules, play sight word games and read books together. After that, we all have lunch together thanks to the kind donations from many individuals.

Each mentor is assigned to a mentee and works at their individual pace and learning styles.

A typical session:

9.30am: Mentors arrive and begin setting up, organizing their materials and waiting for their mentees. Some mentees arrive earlier and they chitchat and joke around for a bit.

10.00am: Mentees revise all the phonemes, sounds and words they have been learning. Mentors play sight word games with them.

10.30am: Mentors start the mentees on the modules where they last left off.

11.15am: Teacher gives the notice to start tying up the session and revising all that has been learnt today, giving homework and wrapping up.

11.30am: Teacher closes the session and we all head for lunch in the canteen. Students grab their personal cups before heading out and the food monitor distributes the food.

12.00pm: Mentors gather back in the room for reflection.

Watch our mentees reading!

All the Form 1 mentees have taken a diagnostic before we started sessions to ascertain what their reading levels are.

All of them are at Primary 1 level or worse, with some barely able to recognize alphabets.

They are all working really hard towards fluency and comprehension these 27 weeks, and here are some videos of them along the process!
