How did it all begin?
As school teachers ourselves, we found that the reason many students cannot cope in school is because of low levels of literacy. We found it as a root cause to why students fall behind, as well as the reason for many disciplinary, absenteeism, and drop out issues.
While we identified literacy to be the problem, a solution wasn't clear. It wasn't easy to find an affordable, easily available and effective program to help our students. A lot of resources we found were expensive and difficult to administer. Many of them were also not structured to guide our students step by step. After some trial and error, we found that some resources available did not help our students make progress in their reading.
This led to MYreaders...
After extensive research, we developed modules that fit into the proven structure for teaching literacy agreed upon by most literacy experts:

We also tested different materials and found the resources at www.readinga-z.com to be helpful as supplementary materials. Thus a combination of original phonics material and adapted resources from Reading A-Z were put together into one comprehensive MYreaders Program.
MYreaders has been used in 7 schools since March 2015. We tracked the progress of students and continuously incorporated feedback to improve on the modules.

How effective were the materials?
1. The MY Readers program helped students achieve significant progress in reading levels.
In one school, 2 students made up to 7 years of reading growth and 12 students grew by one year. The average percentage of reading growth was 50%.
2. Even students who were completely illiterate (did not recognise alphabets) made reading progress through the sessions.
3. The modules are easy for students to follow and easy to carry out even by student tutors.
Unlike many literacy tools out there which includes complicated diagnostics and literacy expertise to carry out, MYreaders materials, which includes Diagnostic Tests, student trackers and reading sheets, are easy to use and have proven effectiveness.
What MYreaders is NOT:
-
It is not for profit, neither for the MYreaders team nor for community leaders
-
It is not meant to replace the classroom English syllabus
What's next?
We aim to reach as many children as possible with the MYreaders program. Our goal is that one day, all children in Malaysia will be able to read in English in order to have equal access to opportunities.
But we can't do it alone. We want to partner with TEACHERS, COMMUNITY LEADERS and LITERACY CHAMPIONS to start up literacy programs in schools, community learning centers and housing areas, anywhere there is children who cannot read.
What MYreaders is:
-
It is to help children/adults who struggle with literacy, at NO FEE to students. The only cost will be the cost of the Reading A-Z license, printing of materials, and folders for students.
-
It is meant as a literacy intervention program added to student's English lessons
